The 1080 Option

Here is part one of my draft on the influence of 1080 on New Zealand land.

1 Indigenous rights to be heard

One people.

I do not ascribe to Aotearoa as the domain of any one ethnicity. It is the domain of all ethnicities. There is the right of mana whenua to share in the decision-making processes as provided under Te Tiriti o Waitangi. But there is also the right of all indigenous people to have their views expressed. By indigenous, I refer to all people who were born and live in Aotearoa. ‘We, the people,” are all people under one nation. [b][i]One people[/i][/b]. Not any one group and certainly not any one person or group of people more important than any other. The issues surrounding 1080 are an issue for and with respect, to all. Otherwise, the wellbeing of all people, all flora and all fauna rest with a few. And that, is unacceptable.

In this letter, I am an advocate of concern that we, as [b][i]One people[/i][/b], are not binding together to resolve workable methods to control the ravenous infestation destroying the taonga of New Zealand. The native species of plant, bird, fish and insect.

I strongly wish to see kuamatua from each district; councillors from each district; a public advocate from each district; a scientific group including specialists in each significant branch of native wildlife, a department of conservation group and government representatives in the same meeting processes. And at those meetings, a detail map of the North Island, the South Island and all satellite islands for discussion. The chairperson of which should be one who is not liened to one side or the other.

To that end, the best resolve for each district brought to the table and ratified into working policies. Whether traps, baits, 1080, fencing, a combination or other measures; the procedure adopted for one area may not be the procedure in other areas; but the business of wholesale 1080 immediately ceased (except where by defined area agreed) and the business of restoring New Zealand native wildlife by ratified, policied methods, adopted.

If you kill off an entire area by 1080 then replant with human-artificially-raised wildlife… is it still, ‘native’ no matter how glorious the bird-song?

Department of Conservation should not need a watch-dog to provide the best service for New Zealand. They need an associate who speaks as One people, authorised by New Zealand Government, to confirm policies by area.

I do understand those who advocate as mana whenua, want to be the leading voice. But I do not believe it entire as there is a multi-culturism in Aotearoa and multi-facets (e.g. scientific) which needs to be heard also. In my resolve, the call for ‘One people,’ inclusive of mana whenua, predictably, is all encompassing in how this would best go ahead.

I see no problem with a temporary national ban if in result there is this coalition of parties to establish a going forward plan. I do see a problem with D.O.C. Continuing a blanket coverage of 1080 drops throughout the land under their care without regard to the voice of the people.
Environmentalist and indigenous rights advocate, Tina Ngata, mentioned, “mana whenua have as much of a say as anyone else when it comes to the decision-making around their treasures.” I believe she is absolutely right. She goes on to say, “Nobody should be cutting mana whenua out of the decision-making process around how to care for our taonga, that’s a right secured by Te Tiriti o Waitangi.” Almost right. The guardianship of New Zealand’s taonga rests in the future, with our mokopuna (children and grand-children.) And that mokopuna will be One people.

New Zealand is losing its native species which is a great loss to the future. I believe, also a disservice to our past. New Zealand would become barren of native mana. And we would rob our descendents of the right to be part of that. Supplanting introduced species and failing to resolve invasive species, is not acceptable.

Neither is the sheer, blind, indiscriminate wholesale use of 1080 without proper, scientific and ethical discussion inclusive of all parties.
