What you need to know / Kia mōhio mai koe:

Snow to low levels, severe gales, and huge swells are on the cards for many areas on Tuesday.

All primary schools in Queenstown closed for the day by snow

Several key routes in the South Island were closed overnight Monday

Residents of Wellington's south coast and the Wairarapa coast affected by bad storms in the past have been advised to leave home, ahead of predicted swells up to 6 metres.

MetService is warning of a chance of heavy snow in the Taihape area, the hills around Wellington and southern Wairarapa, and the Canterbury plains.

11:30 AM Report from Lower Hutt: Today's summery change of weather report. Rapid decline of temperatures in the Wellington, NZ region. It has dropped a further 0.4°C in the last hour and currently at 4.6 °C. With wind chill currently -5.4 °C it reads -1 °C outside. There is potential for -20 °C wind chill coming from the back hills or south island, which are experiencing heavy snowfall. Be awesome for a small day-trek when the weather clears. There is little daylight to speak of at 11:30 AM.

When I look outside up through the cloud cover, it reminds me of one of those end-of-world storm movies. This earth is truly amazing.
